I run a local business. Does AI visibility apply to me?

Especially to you. When buyers ask an AI for the best option nearby, the engine builds its shortlist from local evidence: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings and your site. A national brand cannot out-spend you here, because the answer is not for sale. It goes to whoever's local record is clearest.

The full answer

Why local businesses feel this first.

The questions AI answers best are exactly the ones local buyers ask: who is good near me, who do I trust for this job, who handles my situation. People used to ask a neighbour or scroll a page of results; now they ask an assistant and get a short answer naming two or three options. If your trade lives on nearby customers, that short answer is where you win or lose.

Where the engine gets local answers.

For near-me questions, engines lean on the local record: your Google Business Profile first, then reviews and how you reply to them, the directories and maps you appear in, and your own site explaining what you do and where. None of that is exotic. It is the same housekeeping local search always rewarded, now read aloud by an assistant that names only a few.

What to fix first.

Start with the Business Profile: every field filled, categories right, hours current, photos real. Then reviews: a steady flow matters more than a perfect score, and a considered reply to a bad one is evidence of how you operate. Then your site: say plainly what you do, which areas you serve and what makes you the safe choice, written so an engine can quote it. Then make every listing agree.

The honest advantage.

AI answers do not have an ad slot. For a local trade, that levels a field that advertising money used to tilt: an engine picks names from evidence, and evidence is something a small, good operator can build deliberately. The work is unglamorous, mostly housekeeping and consistency. That is also why it compounds: few competitors keep it up.
